Avuncular DNA Testing (Aunt-Uncle Test)

An avuncular test is done to establish whether an aunt and/or uncle are the biological relatives of their niece or nephew. An avuncular test is normally done when a paternity test is not an option and thus, the only means of establishing paternity is by testing the alleged father’s relatives to see whether they are related to the alleged father’s child.

The standard test requires any of the following: aunt/uncle/nephew/niece; however, you may choose to add more relatives, for example another uncle or auntie. We strongly advise sending in the mother’s DNA sample to be able to provide a stronger result by excluding her share in the genetic heredity of the child thereby enabling a more focused comparison of DNA between the father’s relatives and the child.

The avuncular index will be calculated depending on the common genetic material shared between the people tested. To be noted, that the genetic material shared between aunt and/or uncle and their niece or nephew is less than that shared between father and child.
