When brother and sister want to scientifically establish whether they share one common parent or both and have no parent available for testing, they will need to do an STR analysis test for siblings. STR, or short tandem repeat testing, seeks to locate common patterns of DNA sequences between brother and sister.
Full siblings will share a lot of their DNA whilst half siblings will share a smaller amount of their genetic material. If they are not related at all, the amount of genetic material shared will be very low, and if there happens to be genetic material shared, than this is likely due to the commonality of the genes.
An STR tests seeks to establish if two siblings share at least one common parent without actually testing the parent with which one seeks to establish whether a biological relationship exists. This means that a siblings test is more complex than a paternity test, and testing any available parent helps to produce a more conclusive result.
You will not need to do an STR analysis test:
- If only female siblings are taking part in the test and have different mothers; in this case we recommend an X-chromosome test;
- If only male siblings are taking part in the test; in this case we recommend a Y-chromosome test;
- To confirm if siblings are related from the maternal side, then an mtDNA test is recommended.
You can obtain your STR analysis for Siblings starting at $399.00 and your results will be emailed to you in 5-7 business days beginning from when we receive your samples in our laboratory. Order Here
